Tasmanian schools maintain a high standard of education through academic, personal development and socially rewarding programs.
Schooling in Tasmania commences from the age of four and continues with life-long learning. A Tasmanian innovation is the senior secondary college system, which teaches only grades 11 and 12. Students can choose from more that 100 subjects, and the colleges have extensive facilities with centres of excellence such as learning resource centres, technology centres and sports development centres.Tasmania has 218 government schools and nearly 4,370 teaching staff. Together they educate 75 percent of students. The remaining students attend independent primary and secondary schools, which also have a fine tradition of caring and progressive education. The State Government and Australian Government help finance all schools in Tasmania.
All teachers in Tasmanian schools are university-trained in education and teaching practice. Tasmania has the highest proportion of teachers with postgraduate qualifications in Australia and one of the highest in the world. All schools are computer networked and the state is working to ensure that all students have access to the Internet.
Tasmania has some of the oldest and most prestigious independent schools in Australia. Most of the independent schools cater for boarders and some cater for students preferring a single-sex study environment. Excellent co-educational schools are also available.
