Under the Tasmanian education system, students may attend pre-school or kindergarten prior to primary school.
Students begin compulsory schooling at age six and continue to year 10 (age 16). Continuation to years 11 and 12 is encouraged.
Students in both government and independent schools complete the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE) in years 11 and 12, which provides them with a Tertiary Entrance Score.
The International Baccalaureate is also offered at one government school and one independent school.
Credit for university degrees from the Institute of TAFE Tasmania provide students with one to two years credit, depending on the specialisation. Credit is also available from private vocational providers to TAFE, again depending on the specialisation.
Credit transfer is aligned to the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), a nationally agreed pathway.International students can enter the Tasmanian education system at a number of entry points.
