Tasmania has a growing research and development base in science and technology both in the private and in the public sector. More innovative high-tech firms are choosing to conduct their business from Tasmania and many research institutions have reached the cutting-edge of scientific progress.

Science and technology are already a focus for many industry, community and government activities in Tasmania. Leading institutions undertaking research and development initiatives in the state are:

Cooperative Research Centre for Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems (Antarctic CRC)

The Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre (ACE CRC) provides a focus for Australia's national effort to understand the variability of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean and their role in Australia's future. The ACE CRC is a partnership dedicated to sustainable management of Antarctic marine ecosystem resources and the study of atmospheric and oceanic processes of the Southern Ocean and their role in global and regional climate change.

Cooperative Research Centre for Forestry

The centre conducts research that concentrates on plantation species and provides training for those in the business of growing trees.

Intelligent Island

Tasmania's Intelligent Island program promotes employment growth and wealth creation throughout the Tasmanian economy by accelerating the growth of the state's information and communications technology (ICT) industries. A joint development between the Tasmanian and Commonwealth governments, Intelligent Island will focus on strategic investment to create higher, long-term sustainable growth of the state's ICT industries.

Centre for Ore Deposit Research (CODES SRC)

CODES SRC is an ARC special research centre that works in close collaboration with the Australian mining industry to investigate the geological and geochemical factors that control the formation and location of economic mineral deposits.

The Menzies Research Institute

The Menzies Research Institute focuses on research into diseases. The centre has established an international reputation in the field of population health research and has extended its work and activities throughout the western Pacific region.

Tasmanian Institute of Agricultural Research (TIAR)

TIAR, a research institute with the University of Tasmania, was originally formed to ensure agricultural research and development undertaken in Tasmania meets the needs and priorities of Tasmania's agricultural industries.

Aquafin CRC

The newly established CRC for Sustainable Aquaculture of Finfish (AQUAFIN) began operation in July 2001. The focus of its research is on tuna and salmon aquaculture.

Australian Antarctic Division

The Australian Antarctic Division aims to advance Australia's interests in Antarctica by conducting and supporting science programs in the Antarctic, representing Australia at international meetings on Antarctic affairs and by administering the Antarctic territories in the region.

CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research

Tasmania is the headquarters of the CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research Division. The division's work encompasses the assessment of atmospheric and earth systems and the prediction of climate, weather and ocean processes; and research to integrate coastal management and ensure marine resources and industries are sustainable.
